Tile Coaster Tutorial

I've been meaning to write this up for a very long time. I took all the pictures and got busy with other things. The tutorial was long forgotten.

I came across the image the other day and thought I would complete this for everyone. There are many tutorials but, as I have made too many coaster sets to count, I have a few hints and tricks to share.

  • Design the coasters to be slightly smaller than the tile measurement (3 mm or 1/8 of an inch).
  • Print the coaster designs on good quality paper. I prefer 25lb. I find regular copy weight paper (20lb) to be too light and tends to wrinkle.
  • Cut out the designs.

  • Flip over the paper coasters and spray very lightly with water. This will prevent wrinkling when applying to the tiles with mod podge.

  • Apply a very thin coat of mod podge to the tile surface. I do two or three at a time. This allows the mod podge to dry slightly before applying the paper to the tile and prevent bubble and wrinkles.

  • Apply the paper to the tiles. Smooth out any bubbles and wrinkles gently.
  • Allow to dry, preferably over night.
  • Apply 2 to 3 light coats of mod podge to the tiles and allow to dry between each one.

  • Cut felt slightly smaller than the tile measurement and adhere to the back of each coaster. I ran the felt through my Xyron to apply adhesive.

Enjoy! More the Merrier Monday
